Burst Pipes & Leaks
Unfortunately
sometimes plumbing emergencies such as burst pipes and frozen
pipes do happen, but you can take steps to limit the damage while
you are waiting for our plumbers to arrive.
Try not to panic!
The first thing to do is to prevent water passing the point of
the leak.
Start by turning off the main stop cock often found under the
kitchen sink and if the escaping water cannot be controlled
immediately, open all hot and cold water taps so that the
pipework and storage system drains quickly.
If the leak is on the central heating system turn of the cold
water. If this is a conventional system this stops the header
tank from filling, water will continue to leak untill the tank is
drained, usually containing about 20 litres, and untill the
radiators have emptied above the leek. If this is a sealed system
such as a combination boiler installation there are no tanks to
worry about in both cases there should be drain cocks situated on
a radiator near the front or back door, these enable you to
fasten a hose pipe to the system to empty it safely to
outside.
Switch off any electric immersion heater and then call J Crombie
